End-of-the-Quarter Insanity

<strong>Comic Life</strong> is pretty cool.
Comic Life is pretty cool.
Now that there are less than two weeks left and classes are coming to a conclusion, the projects associated with each have gotten bigger. As a result, I’ve been spending the majority of my time studying and writing code. (That’s why I haven’t been updating very frequently, if you hadn’t guessed.)

I’ve been doing most of my work over in the Allen Center lately, since it’s a nice place to study that’s relatively free of distractions (especially on weekends and after the building closes.) Last night, as I was coding away in the empty Atrium, my Data Structures professor remarked that the Atrium has practically become my private office lately. I’ve been there more than I’ve been in my room these past few days.

Once again, the EE lab was postponed due to the fact that the instructions haven’t been posted on the web site yet, so we couldn’t really do the lab. Everyone else in the class spent the time working on finishing up the report from the previous lab, but my partner and I were already finished. Yay for being ahead of schedule. So, we played around with my new computer for a while. There’s a neat application that comes with the new Macs called Comic Life. It lets you capture images from the iSight camera and put speech bubbles, text, and graphics on top of them to make comic strips. The graphic at the top right is my lab partner, Quoc. (The text says “Where is the lab?”) I wasn’t all that excited about some of the bundled applications like Photo Booth and Comic Life, but they’ve turned out to be a lot of fun.

I’ve gotten a lot of comments on my MacBook. I’ve had a few people tell me they’re waiting for theirs to be delivered, a few people asking questions about software compatibility (which for the most part has been very good) and a few that just wanted to plug in the MagSafe connector.

Morning Entertainment

It’s amazing how much the weather can change in an hour. This morning when I woke up around 8:00, it was all gloomy, overcast, and pouring down rain. By the time I left to go to the Allen Center for my morning coffee and muffin, the sky was clear blue and cloud-free. The only sign that it had been raining earlier was the wet ground.

While I was eating my breakfast and doing some last-minute review for my Programming Languages midterm, the blimp made another appearance in the Atrium. This time it had a new control box on the bottom and some more substantial propellors. Rather than being controlled by a standard RC controller, it was being operated from a laptop computer, so the WiFi is presumably working now. It was fun to watch it zip around the Atrium.

When I walked into my Programming midterm, the weather was still nice and sunny. However, when I came out, it was dark and gray and overcast again. The clouds must be moving pretty fast.

The midterm went well. Hopefully I didn’t make any big mistakes on the typing part. It gets confusing when you have functions taking functions taking functions as arguments and all of those functions are operating on unspecified but distinct types. It’s powerful stuff, though. It’s amazing how one can perform complicated tasks in only a few lines of recursive code in a functional language.

Woodland Park

The forecast today was “partly cloudy.” I guess even if it’s only 1% overcast, that’s still “partly.” The weather today was great. After weeks of nothing but overcast and rain, it sure is invigorating to have a nice, sunny weekend. And I wasn’t going to spend it trapped in my room. I thought about going for a walk, maybe the Montlake Park Arboretum, or Gasworks, or even just campus (all nice places) but I ended up deciding on the Woodland Park Zoo.

It’s fairly convenient to get over there. It’s about a ten-minute ride on the 44, and then about a half-mile walk to the entrance.

Here are a few of my photos.
