May Photos

I’ve finally gotten around to posting another set of photos. Some of these date back to the beginning of the month.

They say it does this sometimes in Seattle.

Of course, the rain isn’t all bad. This rainbow was much more intense when I first saw it on my way down to 8. Of course, I had to run back up to my room and grab my camera.

Unfortunately the fountain is out of commission now that the weather’s nice. Apparently it’s leaking. The water level keeps going up a little bit (even when it doesn’t rain) and back down again, so I have no idea what they’re planning to do about it. According to this, they’re currently evaluating its condition and figuring out what to do.

The roses around the fountain are pretty spectacular, though.

Hot

We’ve been setting record high temperatures in Seattle these past few days. Since McMahon isn’t typically occupied during the summer, and Seattle’s summers aren’t really hot to begin with, the building has no air conditioning. Today it’s stayed pretty tolerable, but yesterday it was nasty. My room is reasonably well ventilated with the big window open, but the core of the building (hallways, stairwells, elevators, et cetera) doesn’t get a lot of airflow.

To add insult to injury, I’ve managed to catch a cold. Not fun. Better now than in the middle of finals week, though.

My PowerBook isn’t exactly liking the heat either. During the time I’ve had it on today (much less than usual, since it’s a pretty effective 65-watt heater) both fans have been running at full blast. Air cooling just isn’t as effective when there’s less of a temperature difference between the air and what you’re trying to cool. Right now, my battery is refusing to charge because it’s too warm.

It’s supposed to cool down a bit tomorrow. I’m looking forward to that. It would be nice if it would just stay somewhere around 65ËšF.

For now, I’m headed over to Ian’s Domain to buy something cold to drink. I’m planning on going on a walk once the sun gets a little lower and it cools off a bit; maybe I’ll have some photos to post later.

Morning Classes

Schedule Autumn 05Wow, it’s been a while since I’ve blogged about anything. Sorry about that. I have a memory card with some photos on it that I should take a look at/post sometime soon.

I got up at 5:45 this morning and sat and refreshed the registration page until my registration period started. The servers apparently run a few minutes fast and I was able to get in at 5:57, so I was glad I was trying. Typed in “1404,” hit submit; “This section is closed, and no alternate sections are open.” Darn. Already full. The five slots left in Photography filled up literally in a fraction of a second. I was pretty much expecting that, though. I’d be curious to know just how many hits the registration server gets simultaneously right when it opens up… I’m guessing it’s quite a few.

The good news is that I was able to get the other classes I wanted. I ended up with an earlier schedule this quarter and didn’t really try to avoid that this time. It’s been nice starting at 11:30 but I’m never really motivated to get up and do much before my first class, and by the time most of my classes are finished, so is most of the afternoon. I figure that 8:30 isn’t too incredibly early, and it leaves my afternoons free for studying/other things.

Since I couldn’t get into Photo, I needed another class to bring me up into a reasonable number of credits. I decided to go with EE 215 (Intro to Electrical Engineering.) I also considered CSE 341 (Programming Languages) but ended up going with the EE course because it’s a prereq for some other things and I might as well get it out of the way.

So, my schedule as of now is what appears at the left (unless you’re still using Lynx and can’t see images ;) )

For those unfamiliar with the UW course numbers:
